Why is it so hard to find a good tradesman?
A report, commissioned on behalf of Foundation Degrees, highlights that more than 40% of those working in construction did not actively choose their profession but drifted into their current job or settled for the position after their attempt to aim higher proved unsuccessful. Almost 30% view their current job as nothing more than a way to pay the bills.
The key finding is that 86% of construction workers class themselves as permanent career drifters.
A quarter of construction workers are set to quit their jobs this year, according to a survey from the Department for Education and Skills (DfES).
Building Trust and Security:
In an industry often marred by mistrust, we strive to be the beacon of reliability and professionalism. We want our clients to feel secure, knowing their homes are in competent and trustworthy hands. Our certified professionals are not just skilled tradespeople but are also dedicated to upholding the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and transparency.
The construction sector had the second-highest number of trader bankruptcies in the 12 months leading up to February 2024 (23%), second only to all other combined service activities (28%). In comparison, third place is the accommodation and food service sector (9%).
Most of the large companies are mainly made up of managers who through their legal departments and agencies hire contractors to do the manual work. After the delivery of a contract, they move their high-level staff to a new project, new location and new contractors.
Those who do remain after the big project has finished, are mainly left to their own devices. Painters, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, fitters... with the knowledge of trade find themselves like a child thrown into deep water training to navigate the business, doing marketing, legal, accounting, customer relations, and contracts none of which they were ever prepared or equipped for.
The UK has the sixth largest construction sector in the world it contributed almost £117 billion to the economy, and comprises over 280,000 businesses covering some 3.1 million jobs, which is equivalent to about 10% of total UK employment.
While there are some large businesses, at least 99.9% of firms are SMEs and, of those, some 83% employ no more than one person, with over 40% of construction contracting jobs being self-employed.
The data from statistics shows that men in elementary occupations such as laborers and skilled trades had the highest rates of suicide.
EVERY single working day in the UK two construction workers take their own life, stress, anxiety and depression account for a fifth of all work-related illnesses according to Lighthouse Club…
Empowered Employees:
Our employees are our greatest asset. For these who love what they do we strive to provide long term employment, invest in their continuous learning and development, providing them with the tools and opportunities to grow both professionally and personally. By creating a rewarding and inclusive work environment, we ensure that our team remains motivated, engaged, and committed to delivering the highest quality of service.
This does not mean that all big companies are blood-sucking monsters, many of them not only provide permanent employment and benefits beyond take-home compensation, contribute to education, housing, upgrade, manage, and maintain critical national infrastructure they also make a positive impact in the communities they work with through contributions, donations, volunteering with local charities and helping local businesses.
Sadly, 83% - (2.6 million) of all construction workers remain isolated with minimal support and a bleak future outlook, facing significant challenges in mental health and job security.
The construction industry has a profound economic, social and environmental impact. It affects every member of society, influencing productivity and well-being at home and at work.
